Positive about Disabled People

It would be fair to say that many people who have disabilities possess a range of valuable skills and experience that can enhance your company and business.

The disability symbol represents an employer’s commitment to welcoming applications from disabled people and implementing good practices.
The symbol lays out five commitments that the employer must meet.

  • To interview all applicants with a disability who meet the minimum criteria for a vacancy and consider them on their abilities.
  • To ensure there is a mechanism in place to discuss, at any time, but at least once a year, with disabled employees what can be done to make sure they can develop and use their abilities.
  • To make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment.
  • To take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make these commitments work.
  • Each year, to review the five commitments and what has been achieved, to plan ways to improve on them and let all employees and Jobcentre Plus know about progress and future plans.

Our job coaches can help in developing many of these skills aspects highlighted above. Our partners at the Disability Service team will then carry out the assessment prior to awarding the symbol. The presentation of the symbol provides a PR opportunity for your business and is taken into account in assessment for the Investors in People Award and the Equal Opportunities Standard for SQMS.
